A wolf was greedily devouring his meal when a bone got stuck in his throat.
Unable to remove it himself, he howled in pain and begged for help.
A passing crane heard his cries and agreed to assist, but only after the wolf promised a reward.
The crane carefully put its long beak into the wolf’s throat and pulled out the bone.
Once the bone was removed, the wolf felt better and turned to leave.
"Wait!" said the crane, "Where is my reward?"
The wolf sneered, "You put your head into my mouth and took it out alive. Isn’t that reward enough?"
The crane realized the danger of helping the ungrateful and left, vowing never to trust a wolf again.
Helping the wrong person may lead to regret rather than gratitude.
