Breaking the Old Rules

During the Tang Dynasty, the emperor wanted to select a talented official.
唐朝时,皇帝要选拔一位有才能的人。

Many ministers recommended noble families' sons.
许多大臣推荐的是贵族子弟。

But Prime Minister Guo Ziyi said, "Talent is not only found in wealthy families."
但宰相郭子仪说:“人才不一定都在高门大户。”

The emperor nodded and sent him to find true talent.
皇帝点头,让他去寻找真正的人才。

Guo Ziyi traveled far and wide, personally searching for capable people.
郭子仪走遍各地,亲自考察有才之人。

One day, he arrived in a small village.
一天,他来到一座小村庄。

He heard of a wise man named Li Yu.
听说这里有个叫李愚的人,很有智慧。

Li Yu's family was poor, and he lived by farming.
李愚家里很穷,只能靠耕田为生。

But since childhood, he had been smart and knew military strategy and governance.
但他从小聪明,精通兵法和治理国家之道。

Guo Ziyi met Li Yu and tested him with many difficult questions.
郭子仪见到李愚,考了他许多难题。

Li Yu answered fluently, analyzing problems with great clarity.
李愚对答如流,分析问题十分透彻。

Guo Ziyi was very pleased and immediately recommended him to the emperor.
郭子仪十分高兴,立即把他推荐给皇帝。

Seeing Li Yu’s outstanding talent, the emperor promoted him without hesitation.
皇帝见李愚才能出众,决定破格提拔他。

Li Yu did not disappoint and provided many valuable ideas for the country.
李愚不负众望,为国家出了许多好主意。

Later, the emperor told his ministers, "True talent should not be judged by birth."
后来,皇帝对大臣们说:“真正的人才不能只看出身。”

Guo Ziyi smiled and said, "If we do not limit talent, the nation will grow stronger."
郭子仪笑着说:“用人不拘一格,才能让国家更强。”

From then on, the court began selecting officials based on ability.
从此,朝廷开始更多地选拔有能力的人。

Breaking traditional standards allowed true talent to shine.
不拘一格,让真正有才能的人有了机会。

Talent should never be restricted by fixed rules.
世上的人才,不应该被固定的标准限制。
