The Butterfly Lovers

Long ago, during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there lived a young woman named Zhu Yingtai.

She was intelligent and eager to study, but at the time, girls were not allowed to attend school.

Determined, she disguised herself as a boy and traveled to Hangzhou to study.

There, she met Liang Shanbo, a kind and scholarly young man.

The two became inseparable friends, studying together for three years.

Unbeknownst to Liang Shanbo, Zhu Yingtai was actually a woman.

As they grew closer, Zhu Yingtai fell in love with Liang Shanbo.

Before returning home, she hinted at her feelings by saying she would arrange a match with her "sister."

When Liang Shanbo later visited Zhu's home, he discovered her true identity.

Overjoyed, he professed his love, but tragedy struck.

Zhu Yingtai's family had already arranged her marriage to a wealthy nobleman.

Heartbroken, Liang Shanbo fell ill and died soon after.

On the day of Zhu Yingtai's wedding, her procession passed by Liang Shanbo's grave.

Overwhelmed with grief, she threw herself against the tombstone, which miraculously opened.

The ground swallowed Zhu Yingtai, reuniting her with Liang Shanbo in death.

Moments later, two butterflies emerged from the grave, fluttering away together.

Their story became a timeless symbol of love, loyalty, and freedom from societal constraints.
