合浦珠还
The Return of the Pearl from Hepu

Heopu's pearls were once very famous.
合浦的珍珠曾经非常有名。

One day, however, the pearls suddenly became scarce.
有一天,珍珠却突然少了。

The fishermen, who depended on pearl diving, were struggling to make a living.
渔民们靠采珠生活,日子变得很困难。

Many people went hungry, and life became very hard.
很多人饿肚子,生活很苦。

A government official named Meng Chang was sent to Heopu.
有一个叫孟尝的官员被派到合浦。

He discovered that the problem was caused by corrupt officials over-harvesting pearls.

Meng Chang ordered a stop to the unfair pearl hunting.

He protected the pearl oysters and helped restore the number of pearls.

In less than a year, the pearls became abundant again.
