The Three Spinners

In a small village, there lived a lazy girl who hated spinning thread.

One day, her mother, frustrated by her idleness, scolded her loudly.

The queen, passing by, overheard the commotion and asked what was wrong.

Embarrassed, the mother lied, saying, “My daughter loves spinning so much, I can’t provide enough flax for her.”

The queen, intrigued, said, “Bring her to my castle. I’ll give her all the flax she desires.”

The mother reluctantly sent the girl to the queen, warning her to keep up the pretense.

At the castle, the queen showed the girl three rooms filled with flax.

“Spin all of this into thread,” the queen commanded, “and you shall marry my son.”

The girl, overwhelmed and clueless, wept bitterly as she faced the impossible task.

Suddenly, three strange women appeared in the room.

One had a broad foot, the second a drooping lip, and the third an enormous thumb.

“We’ll spin the flax for you,” they offered, “but you must invite us to your wedding and honor us as your relatives.”

Desperate, the girl agreed. The three women worked tirelessly, spinning all the flax into thread.

When the queen saw the results, she was delighted and promised the girl would marry the prince.

On the day of the wedding, the three spinners arrived as guests.

The prince, curious about their unusual appearances, asked how they came to look that way.

The first woman said, “My broad foot comes from treading the spinning wheel.”

The second said, “My drooping lip comes from wetting the thread.”

The third said, “My large thumb comes from twisting the thread.”

Horrified by the idea of his bride enduring the same fate, the prince declared,

“My wife will never spin again!”

Thus, the girl lived a comfortable life without ever spinning thread, thanks to her wit and the help of the three spinners.
